Rust is one of the survival games that you don’t play just for fun. With all the information you need to learn, this game requires your full attention, creativity, and patience. The learning curve is very steep, and beginners are often confused with the most trivial things.

One of the first challenges I encountered when building my first base was picking up doors. Of course, everything goes smoothly when you start with a simple wooden door. But the problem arises when you need to upgrade it.

I immediately crafted a metal door after acquiring a furnace and my first few metal fragments. Only to find my old one irremovable. In this article, I’ll teach you how to remove doors so that you won’t have to go through the same headache.

Why Would You Need to Remove a Door in Rust

Why Would You Need to Remove a Door in Rust?

Besides upgrading it, why is it important to know how to remove doors in Rust? Here are the reasons why this is a must-learn:

  • Upgrading: This is inevitable. Sooner or later, you will need to upgrade your door to a stronger one. But you can’t place a door when there is already one in your doorway. So either you break it manually or remove it like a normal person does.
  • Airlocks: Airlocks prevent enemies from going inside your base even if they kill you and you leave the door open. But it requires the right door placements. Achieving an airlock may require you to reposition your doors.
  • Sharing Access: When you have team members, you have to replace a door lock with a code lock to allow them to access your base. But sometimes, you need to remove the door and place it again to be able to put a code lock. It’s rare but it happens.
  • Redesigning Your Base: As a wipe progresses you will need stronger and better defenses to protect your hard-earned loot. This may require you to remove old doorways and replace them with walls or transfer your entrance to another location in your base. In any case, you need to remove doors.

how to pickup doors in rust

1. Picking Doors Up (For Your Own Base)

This is a must-learn for every Rust player as this is the fastest and most efficient way of removing doors in your base. A pro tip: Before trying to remove a door, make sure there’s no one outside camping you as removing a door will leave your base exposed. Safety first.

  • Bring out your Hammer – This tool is required for picking up deployable objects.
  • Remove the Lock. Look at the lock and hold E (Use key) then unlock it. After that, hold E again but this time choose the remove lock option.
  • Open the Door. This is important as you can’t remove doors that are closed.
  • Hold E on the Door – Look at the door and hold the E key to open the actions menu.
  • Select Pickup. Choose the pickup option and this will remove the door and put it in your inventory.

However, this will only work for bases that you have building privileges on. So if it’s an enemy’s base or even if it belongs to your teammate, if you don’t have building access in the Tool Cupboard, you can’t use this method.

2. Destroying Doors (Forced Removal for Raids)

Sorry to bust your bubble but you can’t remove other players’ doors. The only way to get them out of the way is to destroy them. Here are different weapons and explosives you can use to destroy doors in Rust:

Melee Weapons

  • A Hatchet, Salvaged Axe, or even Spear can be used to destroy weak wooden doors. But you would still break quite a few of these tools before a door is destroyed.
  • Metal and Armored Doors can’t be destroyed by melee weapons.

Fire Damage

  • Molotov Cocktails, Fire Arrows, and the Flamethrower are the most efficient for destroying wooden doors.
  • Fire cannot destroy metal or armored doors.

Explosives

If the door is already metal or armored, you’ll need explosives and firearms.

  • Satchel Charges – 2 satchels for a wooden door, 4 for a sheet metal door.
  • C4 (Timed Explosive Charge) – 1 for Sheet Metal, 2 for Garage Doors and Armored Doors. For the love of Rust don’t waste this on Wooden Doors.
  • Rocket Launcher (High-Velocity Rockets) – The best for destroying doors and walls in raids.
  • Explosive 5.56 Ammo – Ammunition for rifles used to chip away at doors if other explosives aren’t available.

Conclusion

Knowing how to remove doors in Rust will make you more equipped in protecting your beloved base and learning how to destroy them is your first step in doing raids. The next thing you should learn about is making Airlocks. This technique will bolster your base’s defenses even at the early stages of a wipe.
