Before we discuss where you can find this resource, let’s go over the different uses of Low Grade Fuel in Rust.

  • Furnaces: Most of you are probably here because you need Low Grade Fuel to make your first furnace.
  • Vehicles: Transportation is important in Rust and you can’t call a cab here. Low Grade Fuel is needed to run and operate vehicles such as boats, minicopters, and cars, even trains.
  • Electricity: A generator uses Low Grade Fuel to generate electricity for your base.
  • Crafting: Low Grade Fuel is a component required in crafting several advanced tools and equipment such as molotov cocktails, flamethrowers, medical syringes, ammunition, and light sources.

There are several ways to get your hands on this resource. Learning about these different methods will let you decide which is the best and most efficient fuel farming strategy for your current base location.

1. Crafting

Low Grade Fuel is craftable without the need for a workbench. To make it, you only need 1 Cloth and 3 Animal Fat.

Cloth can be obtained from Hemp plants and animals. You can also get it by recycling ropes, sewing kits, and clothing. On the other hand, Animal Fat can only be obtained from butchering wild animals like boars, bears, and deer.

However, given the amount of Low Grade Fuel you would need, crafting isn’t a sustainable source for it.

You would need tons of animals and hemp plants to craft sufficient Low Grade Fuel. Plus the crafting process is time-consuming. Crafting Low Grade Fuel can be practical if you live in the snow with tons of Polar Bears to kill or have a stash of animal fat and cloth that you have no other use for.

2. Fuel Barrels

The most common source of Low Grade Fuel are fuel barrels. The yellow and blue barrels are normal barrels with scrap and other materials inside. Fuel barrels are distinguishable through their red color. They are also called oil barrels and can be found in junk piles beside roads and floating in the middle of the ocean.

When you break them you will get some Crude Oil and Low Grade Fuel. Monuments that have tons of fuel barrels include Dome, Lighthouse, and the Airfield’s outermost hangar.

The Dome is my favorite because it has over 5 barrels at the bottom and you don’t even need any radiation protection to get it. But also because it has 2 refineries, which I’ll explain later on.

Fuel barrels have 50 HP just like blue barrels and can be broken just like a normal barrel.

3. Refinery

Remember those black containers with Crude Oil? They are actually raw materials for Low Grade Fuel. But they need to be refined before you can use them. Refineries convert Crude Oil into Low Grade Fuel.

You can find Oil Refineries in monuments such as dome, water treatment, airfield, outpost, harbor, sewer branch, power plant, and train yard. I recommend Dome and Outpost as they are easily accessible to beginners.

If you want to avoid the hassle of running to refineries, you can make one for your base and enjoy refining at the safety of your home. With some wood, metal fragments, and Low Grade Fuel, you can create s small oil refinery and place it on the ground.

Then, similar to a furnace, it is operated with wood as fuel and Crude Oil as raw material, and Low Grade Fuel as the finished product.

Conclusion

Now you know how to get Low Grade Fuel in Rust. While you need a huge amount of this resource, stacking up on it is actually easy once you get the hang of it. That’s why I always like to build relatively close to Dome. This monument is an easy and abundant source of Low Grade Fuel and Crude Oil. Plus there are two oil refineries you can use.
