Need to craft clothing and sleeping bags? Learn the various methods of how to get cloth in Rust with our beginner-friendly guide.
When you first spawn in Rust, one of the most important resources you need to get your hands on is cloth. This material is required to craft sleeping bags which will act as your save point if you don’t want to go back to the beach over and over again. It also allows you to craft clothing to protect you from various hazards in the game.
Overall, cloth are a vital resource that you need to progress. But sometimes, it can be hard to find, especially on official servers where resources are quite scarce.
In this guide, I’ll teach you all the ways you can get cloth in Rust along with some veteran tips and tricks to quickly accumulate this resource.
How to get cloth in Rust
Cloth can be obtained in many ways and can be extracted from multiple sources.
1. Hemp Plants
Hemp plants are your primary source of cloth. They can be found growing on any grass and forest biome. Each plant yields 10 cloth on vanilla servers. As soon as you spawn, pick up all the hemp plants you see. They’re short and have easily distinguishable leaves making them easily spottable during the day.
Harvesting a hemp plant would also give you hemp seeds which you can plant. By providing it with sunlight and water, it will grow into a fully mature hemp plant that you can harvest later on.
You can also harvest cloth from cactus plants if you’re in the desert. Those cactus flesh are also good for quenching your hunger and thirst.

2. Hunting Animals
Animals can be a good source of cloth, especially in snowy regions. If you kill an animal like a boar, a wolf, a deer, a bear, or even a chicken, you can harvest some cloth from it. Just go to the animal’s body and hit it using your stone or hatchet.
The chicken gives the lowest amount of cloth while the deer and bear yield the most. If you have a hunting bow or crossbow, you can easily take down these animals and get a ton of cloth. They give you meat and animal fat as well.
I personally go with the crossbow and nail gun combo.
3. Recycling and Looting
You can also find cloth when farming for scraps. Well, not directly, but you can find items from barrels and crates that can be turned into cloth.
Cloth can be recycled from other materials and items. This includes a lot of stuff, especially clothing like shirts, jackets, pants, gloves, shoes, and headwear. You can also get cloth from sewing kits and ropes.
My favorite strategy for getting lots of clothes fast in Rust is the tactical gloves strategy.
Go to the outpost, and on your way there, break some barrels and open up some crates. Pick up everything you can and head to the recycler. Recycle everything to get scraps except sewing kits and ropes.
Then go to one of the vending machines and purchase a tactical glove for 40 scraps. A tactical glove would give you around 200 cloth in total. It’s super easy and by far the safest method to get cloth in the game.
Pro Tip: When I recycle sewing kits, I recycle them one by one because this yields more rope and ultimately more cloth. When you recycle sewing kits one by one, you get two ropes. But when you do more, you only get 1.5 rope per sewing kit.

Farming Cloth in Rust
If you want to take your cloth game to the next level and make some scraps on the side, why not try hemp farming or cloth farming? Let’s learn the basics of planting hemps and how I farm cloth in Rust like a pro.
The Easy Method
To plant a hemp plant, you need sufficient light and water. So find a nice spot on the ground where sunlight always shines and is near a water source like a river. Plant your hemp seeds and wait for the plant to mature. Harvest it and you have some cloth. Just repeat this process for easy and free cloth.
Starting a Hemp Farm
Here’s a classic tutorial from Tamura77 that I always followed.
I start a hemp farm by going to a river. Then I build a simple base like a 4×4. But make sure that your 4×4 has a water pocket. A water pocket is a 1×1 that is lower than your 4×4 so that it touches the river and has water in it. This is where you will get water for your plants while still being safe inside your hemp base.
Buy a water jug for only 5 scraps at bandit camp and use it to water your plants later. Fill the hemp farm with large planters and plant all of your hemp seeds.
This is where you’ll need a bit of electrical knowledge. You’ll only need a few lights and a power source to provide the light your hemp plants need. For more info about this, you can check out our guide at StealthCore blogs.
After that, it’s all about waiting for them to mature and be ready for harvest. You can sell or trade cloth for profit. I also pair my hemp farms with a horse farm. Since I’m on a river, I have unlimited pumpkins to feed my horses. Horse farming is another way to get tons of scrap in Rust.
